Our Team

Todd Schanbacher
President • Designer

Todd has been involved in the landscape and construction industries since 1980.  He’s actively involved in all aspects of both our wholesale/retail sales division and our design/build division.

Starting out working in the general masonry field with his father building fireplaces, cement walls & floors, sidewalks & natural stone walls, Todd quickly realized a talent for working with natural materials in the landscape.  While construction was interesting, he found a real nitch when he helped a family friend do landscaping for a summer and never turned back. From 1982 until 1985 he worked at Agway Gardens as Assistant Nursery Manager while also planting trees for clients of the garden center.  Todd decided to pursue his love of landscaping and enrolled in the Landscape Development major at SUNY Cobleskill from 1984 to 1987 and graduated with an AAS in Landscape Development.  Todd then worked with local Landscape Architect Donald Peters, owner of Landscapes Inc. expanding his knowledge of the design-build aspect of landscaping.  In 1989 Todd decided to go out on his own and started Green Scapes Inc. at its present location in Jamesville as a landscape installation & maintenance company.

Over the years since 1989 Green Scapes has grown from a 2 person crew of Todd & his brother to a company of 15 seasonal employees and 4 full time year round employees.  Todd started with one 1989 Toyota pick up truck shoveling mulch out into wheel barrows for deliveries and towing a small trailer with his tools & mower.  He has grown into one of the largest bulk landscape supply companies with 6 dump trucks of all sizes, loaders & other handy power equipment.  Long gone are the days of shoveling off mulch for deliveries.  Todd has also grown into recycling lawn & garden waste into a superb compost blend, striving for the best of any natural barks or composts he can find and working with other companies to attain a more natural based landscape process.  The landscape construction aspect of the company designs & builds garden ponds, waterfalls, streams, patios, steps, retaining walls and installs complete landscapes from design to implementation. He is always striving to think up the next crazy landscape or pond idea given the right client, as can be witnessed by the old dump truck waterfall at the entrance to Green Scapes.

Todd has been a member of the Central New York Nurserymen’s Association for many years and has won awards for his creative water garden & landscape displays for the recent CNY Blooms show at the ONCENTER in Syracuse.  Todd was also nominated for the 40 under 40 award for local businessmen and won in 2006, just before his 40th birthday.  Nothing like cutting it close! Anyone who knows Todd can see where he gets all his ideas.  He has had a love of the outdoors since childhood and still enjoys all types of outdoor activities from hunting, hiking, camping, skiing and going to outdoor music festivals or sporting events.  It’s easy to see why naturally beautiful landscapes are so easy for Todd to create.

Beth Fry
Designer • Sales Manager

Beth’s extensive horticultural knowledge, along with her design skills, allows her to supervise and execute our design projects.  She also heads up our design sales, keeping things on track with scheduling & budgeting.

Beth is a 1997 graduate of SUNY Cobleskill with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Plant Science/Landscape Contracting.  She is a Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional (CNLP) and an active member of the Central New York State Nursery and Landscape Association (CNYSNLA).   Beth has served on the CNYSNLA board since 2011 and is in her second year as President (2015).  In 2015 she became the Co-Chair of the CNLP program for the NYS Nursery and Landscape Association.  Beth is also a member of the CNYSNLA Trade Show/Education Day committee.

Green Scapes welcomed Beth to the staff in the spring of 2007 when Great Lakes Horticulture joined with us.  She brings her horticultural skills, extensive plant knowledge and her design abilities to her position as Landscape Supervisor and Designer.  Since her days at Cobleskill Beth has been interested in native plants, habitat gardening, organic, and natural landscape design and practices.  Beth continues to educate herself with the latest horticulture happenings by taking classes, attending lectures and symposiums, and reading.

Some things you may not know about Beth is that she actually started college at Brockport studying business communications and psychology.  While at Brockport Beth enjoyed playing lacrosse and being roommates with her twin sister Amy, so deciding to change majors and transfer schools was not an easy choice.  After working the grounds crew at Oneida Shores Park for two summers and having always enjoyed nature and the outdoors, Beth decided that being outside, being creative and getting dirty everyday was what she wanted from a career.  Beth has a passion for nature and it shows in her design and her work.  When not at work Beth is enjoys spending time in her own garden.  She also enjoys going to listen to local music and tries to attend the Grassroots music festival near Ithaca every year.  In the winter she has played on a women’s hockey team since 2004, after taking a year off due to injury, made a return to her team in 2007.  Beth also enjoys spending time with her family and goes to her niece and nephews activities whenever possible.

Dan Reeder

Building off a childhood filled with camping & tree forts and a neighborhood snowblowing/lawncutting business in high school, he has followed his love & appreciation of art/nature/science into college studies & a professional career.  After several summers working with various landscape outfits, Dan received his Bachelors of Landscape Architecture in 1986 from SUNY ESF.  For the next 10 busy years he gained solid graphic, writing, design, construction & management skills, working his way up in Landscape Architecture firms (mainly EDR, PC in Syracuse & Sasaki Associates in Boston) to Project Manager & Associate. In 1989 Dan passed the comprehensive CLARB registration exam as a Landscape Architect.

1996 was a big transition year for Dan, going from intense office work to life as a graduate student & teaching assistant.  He eventually received his Masters of Science in Landscape Architecture in 2003 from SUNY ESF, while also keeping busy raising a family & running his own business. Natural Systems Landscape Design & Build officially started in 1998 & continues today as his own consulting practice.  Since 2003 Dan has enjoyed his indoor/outdoor careers teaching design as Visiting Faculty in Landscape Architecture at SUNY ESF each semester, as well as completing design/build projects all through each Spring, Summer & Fall.

Spring of 2008 presented Dan with a growth opportunity he just couldn’t refuse by joining forces with Green Scapes.  As a longtime Green Scapes client, Dan always appreciated the friendly knowledgeable atmosphere, high quality materials & free candy at the counter.  Dan brings his professional touch, his artistic design talents & experience creating natural stone walls & walkways, along with his passion for sustainable ‘green’ design principles and opportunities for creating thoughtful, unique, naturalistic spaces for individuals, institutions and communities.

Andrew Zimmerman
Operations Manager

Supervises and works alongside all our crews, making sure things run smoothly & efficiently.  Along with managing crews, material deliveries & equipment mobilization, Andrew also helps keep the sales yard organized & productive.

Before finding his true calling, Andrew was always interested in architecture and design.  As he grew into his later teen years he started to appreciate the beauty of the natural landscape, and by combining these two loves he found his calling in the field of landscape architecture.

His first major employer was a landscape company in Southern Pennsylvania for 5 consecutive summers (1999-2003), where he greatly expanded his knowledge and appreciation of the landscaping business.  Andrew quickly grew within the company, obtaining more and more responsibility, until he attended college at SUNY ESF (Environmental Science and Forestry) in 2004.  While in school, he worked for a few different landscapers in the area, but found a permanent home at Green Scapes, Inc. starting in the summer of 2008.  One year later Andrew graduated from SUNY ESF with a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture.

Andrew started at Green Scapes, Inc. as a laborer, but his construction and leadership talents were quickly noticed and, once again, began moving up within the company’s structure.  The installation and supervision of hardscape projects have become his main forte, leading his crews to create quality patios, sidewalks, block and boulder retaining walls.
